AfroVibe is a pan-African publication that celebrates the continent's rich legacy through an elevated, contemporary lens. The design merges traditional cultural elements with a modern editorial aesthetic, utilizing a regal purple palette and high-contrast typography to command attention. This project highlights a balance between grand visual storytelling and sophisticated, minimalist layouts that allow cultural motifs and vibrant imagery to remain the focal point.

Editorial Design

Problem

Mainstream publications often struggle to represent African heritage without falling into clichéd visual tropes or cluttered layouts that detract from the subject's dignity. The challenge was to create a publication that felt both deeply rooted in tradition—specifically honoring figures like Otumfuo—and sleek enough for a global, high-fashion audience. It required a strategic approach to typography and whitespace to prevent the dense cultural motifs from overwhelming the reader's experience.

Solution

I developed a high-end editorial system that uses strategic whitespace and a dual-typography approach (stately serifs paired with sleek sans-serifs) to create a sense of quiet elegance.

Visual Rhythm: Integrated subtle Adinkra-inspired dividers and gold-accented pull quotes to reinforce the mission of celebrating legacy through modern design. Layout Strategy: Leveraged minimalist layout principles to ensure a dynamic rhythm, allowing the regal purple branding and striking photography to anchor the publication’s identity.
